The Department of English philology and translation was formed on the basis of the formerly founded Department of foreign languages of the Faculty of translation and interpreting of Kharkov Institute of Humanities (now – University) “People’s Ukrainian Academy” in 1993. The departments of Germanic and Romanic philology and translation were founded in 1995. Later the cycle of translation disciplines was separated and made an independent department. Nowadays training in the spheres of foreign philology and translation is realized by the Department of theory and practice of translation (the Head – Ph.D. Panchenko D.I.) and the Department of Germanic and Romanic philology (the Head – Prof. Tymoshenkova T.M.), that comprises three sections: the Section of English philology, the Section of Germanic philology and Section of Romanic philology (French and Spanish).

The Department gives practical classes of the English, German, French, Spanish languages, as well as a wide range of theoretical disciplines of linguistic and culturological cycles.

The staff of the Department includes highly-skilled specialists having experience of working abroad, long-term experience of work at faculties of foreign languages, as well as young teachers – the best graduates of PUA and other Kharkov higher educational establishments. The lecturers of the Department more than once have had traineeship in the countries whose language they teach.

Guest-professors from Great Britain, the USA, France, Germany and Sweden take part in the educational process at the academy.

The Department actively cooperates with leading higher educational establishments of Kharkov and Ukraine, the British Council (Kiev), Institute Francais-Ukraine and Alliance française (Kharkov), Nuernbergerhaus (Kharkov), keeps contact with foreign educational establishments, among them Kent School of English (Great Britain), The Kristianstad University (Sweden), the Centre of German of Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany), The International School of French Azurlingua (France), Université catholique de Lille (France).

The students have an opportunity to test their language training under the conditions of the foreign language surrounding – for quite a lot of years our students have been working abroad in summer – in the USA, Great Britain, Greece and Turkey.

The first graduation of translators and interpreters took place in 1997. Nowadays our alumni successfully work in Ukraine, Russia, Great Britain, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Israel.

Professor T. M. Tymoshenkova heads the faculty scientific school “Language semantics as a reflection of ethnic conceptual and linguistic world view: the problems of cross-disciplinary linguistic researches and linguodidactics”.

Within the framework of this scientific school students and lecturers carry out scientific research, Ph.D. theses are written and defended.

The Academy life there is rich in all kind of interesting events and holidays in which both students and lecturers actively participate: Weeks of departments, holidays of the First Bell and Matriculation, St Tatiana’s Day, “the Equator” – the day of the third-year students, wits & humour competitions, various contests, Olympiads, the Victory Day holiday and many others.

One of the favourite and populous holidays is the Academy Birthday of the, May 29, when our numerous graduates come to congratulate their Alma mater.
