Department of Theory and Practice of Translation
Department of Theory and Practice of Translation is a degree-granting department of the faculty “Translator/Interpreter”. The department was established in 2006 with the purpose of training Specialists and Masters in the field of translation and interpretation from the Germanic and Romance languages into the Ukrainian and Russian languages. The staff of the department is constantly working on the improvement of the delivered training courses; they are trying to meet modern requirements for translators training and to be in line with the latest trends in the field of translation studies. Innovative methods and techniques are actively used in the process of teaching. Lecture notes and all the necessary handbooks and manuals, electronic versions of articles and research papers of the department professors and teachers are available to students of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation. The lectures are read in computerized classrooms of the Academy. Practical language classes, on consecutive interpreting in particular, are conducted with the use of advanced technologies; the teachers also make use of the latest political news from all over the world, regularly update manuals on all disciplines that are read at the department. The teachers of the department participate in science conferences held on the basis of various universities, have domestic and international publications of their scientific works (monographs, articles, abstracts of the reports), and conduct researches within the complex scientific theme of the department "Translation as the most important means of secondary communication", as well as in the spheres of their personal interests. The professors and teachers of the department are engaged in scientific activities, setting an example for their students. An Anthology of Translations "Proteus" is among the most important publications of the department (the teachers were also involved in preparing and making its presentation). The department actively collaborates with leading universities of Ukraine, such as V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Kyiv National Linguistic University, Sumy State University, Zaporizhzhya National University, Zhytomyr State University, Ivan Franko Lviv National University, Kirovograd State Pedagogical University. The department keeps close ties with Germany (University of Erlangen - Nuremberg) and some teachers of the department had a chance to undergo their training there (Bublik I.F. – February 2011). Under the guidance of the department professors and teachers, students take an active part in a contest of students' scientific works on specialty "Translation" and in various conferences both in Ukraine and abroad, e.g.: 2008 – All-Ukrainian contest of student research papers on natural, technical sciences and humanities – Kolesnik V. (diploma of II degree), scientific supervisor Kalnichenko A.A.; 2009 – Lomonosov Conference (Moscow) – Kharkivskaya S., scientific supervisor Ivakhnenko A. A.; 2010 - 2011 academic years – All-Ukrainian contest of student research papers on translation at Donetsk National University - Gumenyuk M. (second place) scientific supervisor Ivakhnenko A. A., M. Kozlov (scientific supervisor Kalnichenko A.A.), Eserin N. (scientific supervisor Kalnichenko A.A.), Sabalayev D. (scientific supervisor Kalnichenko A.A. , consultant Panchenko D.I.). 2012 – All-Ukrainian contest of student research papers on specialty "Translation" – Ivan’ko O. (third place), scientific supervisor Ivakhnenko A.A.. In that way novice translators can apply their skills and try their hand at science. Under the guidance of associate professor Ivakhnenko A. A. the department operates a scientific student circle for Masters of 5th and 6th courses of instruction "The practical implementation of students’ theoretical researches”. Every year, on 30 September, the department celebrates International Translation Day. This academic year we invited translators working in the fields of literary translation, consecutive interpretation and translation of business correspondence. In the 2008-2010 academic years, according to the results of annual Academy-wide competition between departments, the department won the nomination "The implementation in practice the results of professional and scientific activities". The professors and teachers of the department are absolutely certain that while learning and teaching it is necessary to exercise maximum creativity and show a good sense of humor. |
