The Department was established on 7th February, 1994 with the goal of experimental implementation of scientific methods of teaching foreign languages.
The teachers of the Department teach three foreign languages: English as the main language, French and German as elective ones.
The Department is represented by highly qualified specialists who use innovative technologies and modern methods of teaching foreign languages while working with pupils, in particular, pair and group work, the method of projects, presentations, discussions and debates. Audio, video, multimedia equipment is also used for effective acquisition of material.
The Department works in three directions:
1. Increasing the professional level:
- using authentic coursebooks recommended by Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as alternative ones;
- active participation in methodic seminars prepared by the Publishing House of Pearson Education, in scientific and practical, scientific and methodic seminars of city and regional levels conducted by leading experts of universities and schools;
- the teachers of the Department prepare pupils for taking Cambridge exams of UCLES for levels YLC, KET, PET, FCE;
- working out scientific and methodic materials and testing them in the learning process and at annual scientific conferences;
- participation in developing the scheme of succession of education in PUA (there has been developed an integrated cross-cutting curriculum of the course of modern English for preschool children and school children (stages I –III));
- mastering information technologies and using them in the learning process;
- implementation of innovative methods of teaching foreign languages;
- specialization of teachers for working with pupils of certain age groups (primary, secondary and high school).
2. Searching for more effective ways to increase pupils' motivation to learn foreign languages:
- travelling abroad and receiving guests from other countries;
- guidance of researches within the framework of Junior Academy of Science;
- language probation of pupils in English- and French-speaking countries during the holidays;
- correspondence with pupils of the same age abroad, etc;
- continuation of the programme of pupils` exchange between the schools of twin-city Lille (France) and SELS KhUH PUA (Kharkov, Ukraine).
3. Upbringing an educated, intelligent, and cultural personality during lessons and out-of-class activities:
- thematic lessons with the use of audio and video equipment;
- a Week of Foreign Languages;
- meetings of Euro Club;
- meetings of Foreign Languages Club;
- visiting primary school children by high school pupils, showing performances;
- events devoted to different holidays of English-speaking countries;
- participation of primary school children in the concerts devoted to such holidays as: New Year, Women’s Day, St. Valentine's Day;
- an annual contest of wall newspapers on sociocultural aspects of English-speaking countries.
