Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine held the 17th American Studies Summer Institute with the theme “U.S. Presidential Elections: Window into American Society”. The event was hosted by America House in June 22-24, 2016.
Head of the English Language department Natalia Molodcha, along with other 30 teachers from Ukrainian universities, was selected to take part in the seminars.
The opening remarks were made by Sheryl Bistransky, Cultural Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy. The participants actively discussed lectures on the following topics: “Contextualizing Trump: The Struggle Within the Republican Party Since World War II”, “Explaining the Trump Phenomenon: Recent Societal Transformations, New Influence Elites, and the Rise of the Anti-Establishment”, “Contextualizing Clinton: Liberalism and the Democratic Party Since World War II”, Donald Trump and the U.S. Media: Facilitation, Enablement or Entertainment?” Among the invited lecturers were a historian Joseph Crespino, professor of private research Emory University (Georgia, USA), a political scientist Janine Wedel, professor at the School of Public Policy (John Mason University, USA), journalist Irina Chalupa (Radio Svoboda, the Ukrainian version). The results of participation were summarized in the form of mini-debates "Trump against Hillary."
